After suffering from Achilles tendonitis in my left ankle, I couldn’t run without pain, so I couldn’t play hockey and – most importantly – I couldn’t play with my kids in the garden. They’d ask me to run around with them and it was heart-breaking to say I couldn’t. That’s not to mention the toll it took on my mental health. After an initial consultation, Charlie gave me a set of exercises to do which slowly, ever so slowly, began loading my calf with greater and greater efforts. Starting small, getting greater, more reps and more sets, to the point where I could run without pain. The other thing he gave me was a timescale as to how long recovery would take. This was invaluable for my mental health as I could picture when things would be better and how long it would take. Now I barely know I had a calf injury. I was able to get back to playing hockey regularly, I trained for and ran the 2021 Brighton Marathon – my first and certainly not my last – and, once again, far more importantly, I can run around with my boys.I didn’t realise how bound up my physical and mental wellbeing was with my sense of self. To be able to be, well, “me” again – whatever that means – is indescribably wonderful.Thank you to Charlie and everyone at Kesson Physiotherapy for helping me be me.
